SALUTE

THE SALUTE EVOLVED FROM ANCIENT ROME. AS A MEANS
OF GREETING, THE ROMANS PUT THEIR HANDS UP TO
SHOW THAT THEY WERE FRIENDS AND HAD NO WEAPONS.
THIS STARTED BECAUSE BRUTUS KILLED CAESAR WHO
WAS SUPPOSEDLY A FRIEND. IT THEN EVOLVED INTO A
WAY OF GREATING A FRIEND AND FINALLY INTO A SALUTE.

GIVE ME SOME SKIN

THIS IS A GESTURE WHICH STARTED AMONG NEGROES, BUT
HAS RAPIDLY SPREAD TO MANY WHITE MEN AS WELL. (OF
COURSE, THE ONLY PLACE I HAVE SEEN THIS HAS BEEN
IN DETROIT). THE HAND OR HANDS OF ONE MAN (I HAVE
NEVER OBSERVED WOMEN DOING THIS) IS (ARE) THRUST
OUT PALM UPWARDS AND IS (ARE) SLAPPED BY THE HAND
(HANDS) OF THE OTHER. IT IS USED TO EXPRESS A FEELING
OF "SOUL" BETWEEN THE TWO MEN--A FEELING OF INTENSE
AGREEMENT WITH THE OTHER'S MOOD.
THIS IS PERFORMED WITH VARIATIONS. SOMETIMES, ONE MAN
TURNS AROUND AND EXTENDS HIS HANDS (PALMS UP) OUT
BEHIND HIM TO BE SLAPPED.
