BLACK MEMBERS OF THE MARINE CORPS HAVE ADOPTED CERTAIN BLACK
MUSLIM HANDSHAKES AS A FORM OF GREETING. THEY ARE QUITE
COMPLICATED, AND INDIVIDUALS ARE FREE TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN
VARIATIONS. THE RIGHT HAND IS HELD IN A FIST AND THE TWO
PEOPLE STRIKE THEIR FISTS TOGETHER RAPIDLY IN COMBINATIONS
OF SIDE, FRONT, TOP, AND BOTTOM, AND USUALLY END BY OPENING
THEIR FISTS AND GRASPING ONE ANOTHER'S HANDS. SOME WEAR
LEATHER BRACELETS WITH FRINGE OR TASSELS HANGING FROM THEM,
AND THESE FLY ABOUT RHYTHMICALLY DURING THE HANDSHAKE.
WHEN THE GREETING IS BETWEEN A BOY AND A GIRL, SOME FORM OF
LIGHT KISS IS OFTEN INCLUDED IN THE HANDSHAKE.

Submitter comment: I HAVE SEEN SITUATIONS MANY TIMES WHERE A BLACK PERSON
WOULD COME UP TO A TABLE OF AS MANY AS A DOZEN OTHER BLACK
PEOPLE AND GIVE SUCH A HANDSHAKE TO EACH ONE, A PROCESS
OF PERHAPS 5 MINUTES ALTOGETHER.

IT SEEMS THAT ONE NIGHT RAY ROWLAND, MY ROOMMATE AND A
HIGH SCHOOL BUDDY OF HIS WERE IN THE ROOM. SOMETHING
HAD HAPPENED ABOUT WHICH THEY FELT A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF
PRIDE, I GUESS. THE NEXT THING I SAW WAS RAY AND JERRY
APPROACHING EACH OTHER AS IF TO SHAKE HANDS. BUT WHAT
HAPPENED WAS DEFINITELY A HANDSHAKE IN THE NORMAL SENSE
OF THE WORD, ANYHOW. WITH THEIR RIGHT HANDS, THEY
TOUCHED THUMBS IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE TOPS OF THE HANDS
FACED EACH OTHER. THEN THE HANDS SWUNG AROUND AND THE
BOTTOMS TOUCHED, THUMBS STILL TOUCHING. UPON THE
RELEASE OF THE THUMBS, THE HANDS SLIPPED OFF EACH OTHER.
NEXT CAME A SNAP OF THE FINGERS, FOLLOWED BY A SLAP OF THE
RIGHT LEG. THE HAND THEN CAME UP TO THE MOUTH FOR A
SMALL AMOUNT OF MOISTURE ON THE MIDDLE FINGER TO BE
APPLIED TO THE SIDE OF THE HEAD ABOVE THE EAR.
I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY. I LAUGHED.

GOODBYE GESTURES

WHILE WORKING AS A TOURIST GUIDE FOR THE FORD MOTOR
COMPANY, I WAS ASSIGNED A GROUP OF ENGLISHMEN TO
ESCORT THROUGH THE ROUGE PLANT. WHEN LUNCH WAS
COMPLETED, I STOOD UP TO LEAVE THE TABLE AND SAY
GOODBYE. WHILE LEAVING, A NUMBER OF THE ENGLISHMEN
GESTURED BY CLENCHING THEIR FINGERS LIKE A FIST,
THUMB STRAIGHT UP. WITH THE HAND IN SUCH A FORM,
THEY WOULD MOVE THE ARM UP AND DOWN ABOUT 5 TO 6
INCHES IN ALL. ONE OF THEM TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS
A GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK SIGN ALL IN ONE.

IS REPUTED TO BE A SYMBOLIC YEARNING OF THE OTHER'S SOON
