IN AN IRISH CHRISTMAS CAKE THERE IS ALWAYS PLACED
A GOLD RING SO THAT WHOEVER EATS THE PIECE OF CAKE
AND FINDS THE GOLD RING, WILL BE MARRIED WITHIN THE
NEXT YEAR.
Submitter comment:
I HEARD THIS FROM MY IRISH LANDLADY AT CHRISTMAS TIME
OF 1970. I DON'T THINK SHE REALLY BELIEVED IT WOULD
HAPPEN.

CZECH CHRISTMAS BELIEF
ON CHRISTMAS EVE AT MIDNIGHT, IF A SINGLE MAN TAKES A
MATCH AND STRIKES IT, LETTING IT BURN DOWN A SHORT
WAY, THEN GRABS THE MATCH AT THE BURNT END AND
ALLOWS IT TO BURN DOWN TO THE OTHER END, THE MATCH
WILL BEND TOWARD ONE DIRECTION, AND IN WHATEVER DIREC-
TION THE MATCH POINTS, THAT IS THE DIRECTION YOUR
FUTURE WIFE WOULD COME FROM.

MALOCCHIO CURE (EVIL EYE)
A CUP OF WATER IS SET ON A TABLE IN FRONT OF THE
AFFLICTED PERSON AND 13 GRAINS OF WHEAT ARE
PREPARED. EACH GRAIN OF WHEAT IS INDIVIDUALLY
DROPPED INTO THE WATER. IF THE GRAINS OF WHEAT
FLOAT AT THE TOP STANDING ON END, THIS MEANS THAT
YOU HAVE THE MALOCCHIO; BUT IF THEY JUST LAY FLAT,
THIS MEANS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE IT. AS EACH GRAIN OF
WHEAT IS INDIVIDUALLY DROPPED INTO THE WATER, A
PRAYER IS CHANTED AUDIBLY BUT NOT SO THAT (IT) IS
ABLE TO BE UNDERSTOOD.
Submitter comment:
NOTE: THE CURE AND ITS PRAYERS ARE INHERITED ON
CHRISTMAS EVE AT MIDNIGHT. IT IS AT THIS TIME
AND THIS TIME ONLY THAT THEY CAN BE DISCLOSED.
THE PERSON WHO RECEIVES THE CURE TAKES AN OATH OF
SECRECY CONCERNING THE PRAYER.

THE "HAIRICANS"
THE AREA A FEW MILES PAST HERE (HIS HOUSE) IS KNOWN TO
MOST PEOPLE AS THE "HAIRICANS" (MY OWN SPELLING OF IT--
I'VE NEVER SEEN IT IN PRINT). THE STORY IS THAT ON
CHRISTMAS EVE OF 1860 A HURRICANE HIT THERE, AND FROM THEN
ON EVERYBODY CALLED IT THE "HAIRICANS."
