This is a true story. One night I was working the afternoon
shift at Ford Motor Company Steel Division. I came home and saw
all the lights in the house on. Every light in every room was
lit. My wife was in the living room, sitting all curled up and
looking like she just seen a ghost. I asked her what was going
on? She just looked at me and said she had fallen asleep on
the couch and when she woke up all the lights were on. She said
she believed that it was the ghost of old Mrs. Thompson, the
woman who died in the living room. To this day, I believe that
we were visited by her ghost.

Submitter comment: My step daughter was only five years at the time, so I really
don't think that she could have turned on all the lights the way
they were. I sold this house in 1988.

In 1967, a composite picture of our sorority sisters fell off
the lounge wall. The crash awakened the girls and they ran from
their bedrooms to the lounge. They found that the crack in the
glass only cut across one face on the picture. It was later found
that this sorority sister's fiance was killed in a car accident at
the exact time that the picture had fallen. His car clock stopped
running upon impact which was the same time that the girls had
been awakened by the picture crashing to the floor.

Submitter comment: I pledged this sorority in 1969 and was told this by my
sorority sisters. The glass had been replaced and the picture
still hung on the wall. The sorority sister whose face was marred
by the crack had transferred to a different university following
her fiance's death.

There was a man who urined in the woods quite often. A
friend told him that if he kept it up the snakes would become
very mad with him and trace his scent one day. Later as the days
went by the man decided to urine on a rock; to the man this was a
lot of fun.
While wetting the rock a snake bit him on his penis and the man
began to panic, fearing that he would die. His friend went for
help to the nearest doctor. He returned to the man in pain and
told him that the doctor's only cure for him to live would be to
suck the poison from his penis. They both looked at each other
and the friend told him, "Well my friend I told you to stop
urining out in the woods because the snakes didn't like it, so I
guess the snakes have won because you will have to die!"

Claddaugh

The claddaugh is an Irish symbol of Love, Friendship and
Loyalty. It looks like two hands holding a heart, with a crown upon
the heart. The hands are friendship, the heart is love, the crown
is loyalty. This symbol is traditionally upon an Irish wedding
ring. This ring was created by a seafarer who had docked in the
town of Claddaugh, Ireland. While in port, he met a young maiden
and fell in love. He was in deep despair at the thought of leaving
her behind, so he went into the hills and designed and forged a
ring with this symbol upon it. He gave it to the maiden as a
symbol of his love, loyalty and friendship. Today this ring is
given upon the engagement of a couple and is worn with the heart
facing away from the woman. Upon their marriage, the ring is
turned around, with the heart facing the woman, indicating her
commitment (or his commitment, as this ring is also given as a
wedding ring to the man) to her husband.

Submitter comment: Claddaugh is pronounced klad-awe.

Nieman Marcus Cookie Recipe:
2 cups butter 1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder 2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp. soda 4 eggs
24 oz. chocolate chips 2 tsp. vanilla
4 cups flour 3 cups chopped nuts
1-8 oz. Hershey bar, grated 2 cups sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal
Cream butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix
together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add
chocolate chips, Hershey bar, and nuts. Roll into balls and
place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at
375. Makes 112 cookies (recipe may be halved). Measure oatmeal
and blend in a blender to a fine powder.

Submitter comment: Story has it that a lady begged to buy the cookie recipe from
Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas and was refused. After several
attempts, she was told that the recipe would cost two fifty. The
lady said fine and requested the store put it on her charge
account. When the lady received her bill the next month, she was
shocked to see the total $250.00 for a cookie recipe on there.
When she questioned the store, she was told the recipe is a very
expensive one and the store would not refund her money. She was
also told that the recipe is a company secret and should not have
been sold. To get even, the lady is spreading the recipe all
over the country by mail, word of mouth, etc. She is the first
to admit she indeed learned an expensive lesson.

THIS BOY WAS GOING TO HIS COUSIN'S TO GO FISHING WITH THEM.
WHEN HE GOT OFF THE TRAIN, NOBODY WAS THERE TO MEET HIM, SO HE
TOLD THE TRAINMASTER THAT HE WOULD WALK. THE TRAINMASTER THEN
SAID, "BEWARE OF JACOB MARLEY." THE BOY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT
HE MEANT, BUT HE STARTED WALKING TOWARD HIS COUSIN'S HOUSE. IT
WAS RAINING AND THUNDERING WHEN HE HAD SET OUT. HE HADN'T BEEN
WALKING VERY LONG WHEN HE HEARD A WAGON AND HORSES BEHIND HIM.
HE SAW AN OLD MAN DRIVING AN OLD WAGON. WHEN THE WAGON CAME
NEARER, HE YELLED OUT, "CAN I HAVE A RIDE?" NO ANSWER CAME
FROM THE MAN, SO THE BOY JUMPED ON.
WHEN HE WAS NEARING HIS COUSIN'S HOUSE HE SAID, "I GET OFF HERE,"
BUT THE WAGON KEPT GOING. HE JUMPED OFF, BUT HE HAD LEFT HIS
SUITCASE ON THE WAGON. HE WENT IN AND TOLD HIS COUSINS ALL ABOUT
WHAT HAPPENED. THEY SAID, "YOU MUST OF BEEN RIDING WITH JACOB
MARLEY."
THIS IS THE STORY THEY TOLD HIM:
ONE NIGHT, IT WAS THUNDERING AND LIGHTENING, AND IT WAS RAINING
VERY BAD. JACOB MARLEY WAS DRIVING HIS CARRIAGE ALONG THAT SAME
ROAD THAT NIGHT. THERE WAS A SHARP RIGHT TURN ABOVE THEIR
HOUSE, AND MARLEY HAD GONE OVER THE CLIFF.
THE NEXT MORNING THEY WENT DOWN TO THE CLIFF AND FOUND HIS
SUITCASE.

GHOST OF ROSECRAN

MY INFORMANT SPENT 14 YEARS IN WINCHESTER, TENNESSEE, MOST OF
THEM IN THIS OLD CIVIL WAR BUILDING WHICH WAS THE HEAD-
QUARTERS OF ROSECRAN. AT THIS ONE TIME, THE SISTER WHO WAS
IN CHARGE, FELT VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF THESE
SPIRITS. SHE WOULD NOT ALLOW ANY OF THE SISTERS TO SLEEP IN
THIS ROOM. THEY ALL HAD TO SLEEP IN THE DORMITORY. MY
INFORMANT HAD ASKED IF SHE COULD SLEEP ON THE BACK PORCH.
SHE WAS GIVEN PERMISSION. ONE AFTERNOON AS SHE CAME OUT OF
HER ROOM SHE COULD HEAR A SOUND ACROSS IN THE ROOM. SHE FELT
SURE THAT ALL THE SISTERS WERE IN THE CHAPEL AND THAT NO ONE
WAS UPSTAIRS. SHE WENT TO THE CHAPEL TO SEE. ALL THE SISTERS
WERE THERE. SO SHE WENT BACK UPSTAIRS OUTSIDE THE ROOM AND
FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR. A CAT CAME WALKING OUT. THE CAT PROBABLY
GOT IN THROUGH THE WINDOW ON THE BACK PORCH.

PLAYFUL SPIRIT

"POLTER GEIST" IS A GERMAN TERM THAT MEANS SPIRIT THAT HECKLES
(PLAYFUL). BUT THEY WON'T HARM YOU. WHEN YOU BEGIN TALKING
ABOUT THEM, PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE CRAZY.
THIS INCIDENT ALSO TOOK PLACE IN WINCHESTER, TENNESSEE. THE
CATHOLIC SCHOOL THERE WAS CALLED WINCHESTER ACADEMY. IT WAS
IN A CIVIL WAR BUILDING, WHICH HAD BEEN THE HEADQUARTERS OF
ROSENCRAN DURING THE CIVIL WAR. FOR MANY YEARS THE SISTERS
HAD LIVED IN THE BUILDING, BUT AROUND 1962 THE OLD BUILDING HAD
BEEN CONDEMNED AND THEY MADE THEIR RESIDENCE IN A SMALL HOUSE
A FEW BLOCKS AWAY FROM THE SCHOOL. THIS HOUSE HAD BELONGED
TO A VETERINARIAN WHO WAS AN ALCOHOLIC. MANY OF HIS INSTRU-
MENTS WERE STILL IN THE HOUSE WHEN THE PARISH BOUGHT IT. THE
PASTOR CLEARED AWAY THE THINGS. THE WIFE HAD TAKEN VERY GOOD
CARE OF THE YARD. THE SISTERS HADN'T DONE AS WELL AS SHE.
WHEN THE PARISH BOUGHT THE HOUSE THEY HAD TO DO SOME REMAKING
SO AS TO MAKE A CONVENT FOR THE SISTERS. THEY HAD PUT THE
CHAPEL RIGHT NEXT TO ONE OF THE BEDROOMS.
ONE NIGHT AROUND 11:30 OR 12:00, THE SISTERS HEARD A SQUEAKING
SOUND, LIKE A DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING. BUT THEY COULD SEE
NO DOOR MOVING; THEN THEY HEARD HEAVY FOOTSTEPS AND WALKING
AROUND. THE SISTERS WERE IN THE SAME ROOM. THEY HEARD "HA,
HA, HA"--SOUNDING LIKE IT WAS IN THE CHAPEL, THE ROOM RIGHT
NEXT TO THEM. THEY WENT AND LOOKED ALL AROUND THE HOUSE,
THINKING SOME ONE WAS IN THE HOUSE. BUT THEY COULD FIND NO
ONE. THEY WENT BACK TO THEIR ROOM AND THEY COULD HEAR THE
SOUNDS AGAIN. SO THE TWO SISTERS DECIDED TO SAY THE ROSARY
OUT LOUD AND THE NOISE STOPPED WITHIN A SHORT TIME.

GHOST OF ROSECRAN; POLTERGEIST

FOUR SISTERS WERE TEACHING IN WINCHESTER, TENNESSEE, IN AN OLD
SCHOOL BUILDING THAT USED TO BE THE HEADQUARTERS OF ROSECRAN.
TWO SISTERS WERE IN THE SISTERS' ROOM AND THEY COULD HEAR THE
SOUND OF FEET DRAGGING, AND THE SOUND OF FINGERS POPPING. THIS
BUILDING HAD BEEN USED AS A PLACE TO HANG SPIES DURING THE
CIVIL WAR. ONE OF THE SISTERS SAID, "I HEAR FEET DRAGGING AND
SHUFFLING, DO YOU?" "YES," SHE HEARD IT TOO. THEY HEARD IT A
SECOND TIME. THEY WENT TO ANOTHER SISTER AND ASKED HER. SHE
DID HAVE A HEAVY FOOT; SHE SAID THAT SHE HADN'T. THIS SISTER
HAD HAD EXPERIENCES WITH THE SPIRITS ALSO. SHE SAID SHE KNEW
HOW TO GET RID OF THEM. SHE SAID TO SAY, "IN THE NAME OF GOD,
WHAT DO YOU WANT, AND MAY YOU REST IN PEACE." ALSO TAKE HOLY
WATER, WHICH IS A SACRAMENTAL IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, AND
SPRINKLE IT AROUND AS YOU SAY THIS. THE SISTER WHO WAS MY
INFORMANT, SAID THAT SHE WASN'T GOING TO SAY "WHAT DO YOU WANT?"
BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WANT TO FIND OUT. BUT SHE DID SAY, "IN THE
NAME OF GOD MAY YOU REST IN PEACE." THEN THE NOISE STOPPED.

POLTERGEIST--MISSING CAR KEYS

TWO SISTERS WENT TO THE WINCHESTER ACADEMY, WHICH WAS HOUSED
IN AN OLD CIVIL WAR BUILDING. THIS BUILDING WAS ROSECRAN HEAD-
QUARTERS, DURING THE CIVIL WAR. SOME MEN HAD BEEN KILLED, THAT
IS, HUNG, IN THIS ROOM WHERE THE MIMEOGRAPH MACHINE WAS. THE
SISTERS HAD COME THERE ONE EVENING AROUND 6:00 P.M. AND HAD
GONE UP TO THIS ROOM TO DO SOME DITTO WORK. ONE OF THE
SISTERS PUT THE CAR KEYS ON THE TABLE NEXT TO THE MIMEOGRAPH
MACHINE. AFTER THEY HAD FINISHED THEIR WORK, SISTER WENT TO
GET THE KEYS, BUT THEY WERE GONE. THEY SEARCHED EVERYWHERE IN
THE ROOM, AND EVEN WENT TO THE CAR AND THE PLAYGROUND. THEY
CALLED THE PASTOR OF THE PARISH AND HE HELPED TO SEARCH.
THEY FINALLY HAD TO GET A SECOND SET OF KEYS FROM THE
JANITOR. THIS WAS A SATURDAY NIGHT. MONDAY MORNING WHEN
THEY WENT BACK TO SCHOOL, ONE OF THE SISTERS WENT TO HAVE
ONE LAST LOOK, SINCE IT WAS DAYLIGHT. SHE WENT TO THE
ROOM AND THE KEYS WERE ON THE TABLE WHERE SISTER HAD
LEFT THEM.

THIS INCIDENT TOOK PLACE IN WINCHESTER, TENNESSEE, AT A CONVENT
OF DOMINICAN SISTERS. THE SISTER TAUGHT AT WINCHESTER ACADEMY.
THEY LIVED AT THE HOUSE ON NORTH HIGH STREET--THE HOUSE OWNED
BY THE VETERINARIAN. (BETWEEN 1964-1966) THE SISTERS WERE
DOING THEIR HOUSE CLEANING AND ONE OF THEM WAS USING WINDEX
AND A SPONGE. SISTER PUT IT DOWN AND LEFT FOR A FEW
MINUTES, WHEN SHE CAME BACK IT WAS GONE. SHE ASKED THE
OTHER SISTERS IF THEY HAD IT. NONE OF THEM HAD IT. THEY
SEARCHED, AND SEARCHED, AND COULD NOT FIND IT. ABOUT A
WEEK OR SO LATER THEY FOUND IT UNDER A CABINET, BOTH THE
WINDEX AND SPONGE TOGETHER, JUST AS IT HAD BEEN LEFT
BEFORE. NO ONE COULD EXPLAIN IT.

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A COUPLE ON VACATION, WHO HAD
TRAVELED ALL DAY AND FINALLY CAME UPON AN OLD TOWN. AS THEY
WERE WALKING THROUGH THE TOWN, THEY CAME UPON THE OLDEST
HOUSE THEY HAD EVER SEEN. WHEN THEY WERE MET BY AN OLD
COUPLE WHO OFFERED TO FEED THEM AND LET THEM SLEEP IN THE
UPSTAIRS OF THE HOUSE. THE NEXT MORNING, WHEN THE VISITORS
WOKE UP, IT WAS STILL VERY EARLY, SO THEY LEFT A SILVER
DOLLAR ON THE SMALL MARBLE TABLE IN THE ROOM FOR THE OWNERS
OF THE HOUSE. WHEN THE TWO OF THEM STOPPED DOWN THE STREET
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL PAST THE OLD TOWN, THEY ASKED
THE GASOLINE STATION ATTENDANT WHO IT WAS THAT LIVED IN THE
OLD HOUSE IN THE DESERTED TOWN BACK THERE. THE MAN TOLD THEM
THAT THAT TOWN AND HOUSE HAD BURNED DOWN OVER A HUNDRED YEARS
AGO AND THERE WAS NO LONGER ANYONE LIVING THERE. SO, THE
COUPLE WENT BACK, AND SURE ENOUGH THERE WAS NOTHING BUT
GREEN GRASS AND TREES GROWING ALL AROUND THE AREA WHERE THEY
HAD JUST BEEN. THE STRANGE THING ABOUT IT WAS THAT WHEN
THEY WENT TO GET A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PLACE WHERE THEY
HAD SPENT THE NIGHT, THEY FOUND THE MARBLE TABLE WITH
THE SILVER DOLLAR ON IT STILL STANDING THERE, ALTHOUGH IT
WAS ALL ALONE.

JUDY FRANK CLAIMED THAT THERE IS A GHOST LIVING ON GILLETTE 4TH
FLOOR. ON TWO OCCASIONS THIS FOLLOWING UNEXPLAINABLE
PHENOMENON TOOK PLACE:
JUDY SAID THAT A YEAR BEFORE (1967) SHE HAD BEEN VISITING
A GIRL IN HER ROOM AND THEN SHE LEFT IT AND WENT BACK TO HER
OWN ROOM. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER SHE RETURNED TO THE FIRST
ROOM AND KNOCKED ON THE DOOR LIKE SHE ALWAYS DID (A PARTICULAR
KNOCK WHICH IS VERY COMMON: DA DADA DA DA (PAUSE) DA DA)
AND SHE HEARD HER FRIEND SAY "COME IN." SHE TRIED THE
DOOR AND IT WAS LOCKED, SO SHE KNOCKED AGAIN, THIS TIME
LEAVING OFF THE LAST "DA DA" WHICH SHE HEARD SOMEONE TAP OUT
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR. SHE THOUGHT IT WAS HER
FRIEND PLAYING AROUND WITH HER. SO SHE DECIDED TO KEEP
PLAYING. SHE'D KNOCKED THAT COMMON LITTLE KNOCK AND ALWAYS
LEFT OFF THE LAST "DA DA" AND SHE'D HEAR THOSE LAST "DA DA'S"
COME FROM THE OTHER SIDE. FINALLY THE GIRL OPENED THE DOOR
FOR JUDY. JUDY SAID TO HER THAT IT WAS ABOUT TIME SHE OPENED
IT AND STOPPED PLAYING AROUND. THE OTHER GIRL DIDN'T KNOW
WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT. JUDY ASKED HER IF IT WAS NOT SHE
WHO FINISHED THE "DA DA'S" AND THE GIRL SAID "NO." THEN THEY
BOTH GOT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR AND KNOCKED WITHOUT
FINISHING. THE DOOR RAPPED "DA DA" BACK. JUDY AND HER
FRIEND THOUGHT THERE MUST BE AN EXPLANATION. THEY WALKED
IN THE ROOM IN SEARCH OF SOMEONE HIDING, BUT THERE WASN'T
ANYONE. THEY WENT OUTSIDE THE CLOSED DOOR AND KNOCKED AGAIN
AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THEY GOT OTHERS TO WITNESS IT.
THE DOOR WOULD KNOCK ALL NIGHT BUT NEVER DID AGAIN. JUDY
NOW BELIEVES IN GHOSTS.
