A popular jump rope chant in grade school was:
Cinderella, dressed in yellow,
Went upstairs to kiss her fellow.
How many kisses did she get?
The number of kisses was then counted by how many
times the jumper was able to jump without missing.

African-American Children's Game (jump rope)

This is sung as children jump rope.
Teddy bear, teddy bear turn around
Teddy bear, teddy bear touch the ground
Teddy bear, teddy bear shine your shoes
Teddy bear, teddy bear read the news
Teddy bear, teddy bear go up stairs
Teddy bear, teddy bear say your prayers
Teddy bear, teddy bear turn out the light
Teddy bear, teddy bear say good night.

Submitter comment: The person jumping rope must do each thing mentioned
in the song as he/she jumps the rope. The jumper must jump
out of the rope after saying good night.

African-American Children's Game (jump rope)

Mable, Mable set the table
don't forget the
red
hot
pepper!

Submitter comment: Two children are turning the rope and one is jumping
in the middle of the rope. When "red hot pepper" is
said, the rope is turned as fast as the rope turners
can possibly turn until the jumper misses.

Clipsie Clapsie

This is a game which is accompanied by a chant.
A ball is thrown up before each verse, and the prescribed
action is performed before catching it. The game was
played with only one ball, so the girls had to take turns.
It was especially difficult because the player had to chant,
clap, and do something all at the same time.
Clipsie, Clapsie
Twirl around Tabactsie
Touch your heel,
Touch your toe,
Touch the ground,
And under you go!

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, go upstairs.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say your prayers.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn out the light.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say goodnight.

Submitter comment: This jump rope rhyme dictated the actions for the
person jumping rope. For example, when it says turn around
the jumper must jump around in circles.

"Say Say O' Playmate

Say say o' playmate come out and play with me. / You and your
dolly three, climb up my apple tree. / Slide down my rainbow, into
my cellar door, / and we'll be jolly friends for ever more, more,
more, more, more.
So sorry playmate, I cannot play with you. / My dolly has
the flu, she spit up on her toe. / Ain't got no rainbow, ain't
got no cellar door. / But we'll be jolly friends for ever more,
more, more, more, more.

Submitter comment: The first paragraph is the part the first child would sing
to the other child. Then the second child would reply to the
first paragraph with the answer. This was a hand clapping game
for children to play and also was used sometimes as a jump rope
chant.

C'mon girls, let's have a fight.
Here comes (name of the girl jumping) with her skirt on tight
She can wobble.
She can wibble
She can do the splits.
But she can't close her eyes and jump like this.
(Jumper closes eyes and counts until she misses.)

Bubble Gum

Bubble gum, bubble gum in a dish. How many bubble gums do
you wish?

Submitter comment: This is said prior to the start of such games as "tag" or
"hide and seek" to see who is going to be it. One person is
chosen to give a number and after it is spelled out, the person
that the last letter stops at, is it.

Down in the Valley

Down in the valley where the green grass grows,
There sat Susie as sweet as a rose.
She sang, she sang, she sang so sweet,
Along came Tommy and kissed her on the cheek.
How many kisses did she receive?
1-2-3-4-till you miss.

Submitter comment: This game is played when you are jump roping.
