GERMAN CHRISTMAS CUSTOM
GERMANS DO NOT GIVE PRESENTS AT CHRISTMAS THAT ARE BOUGHT
AT THE STORES. THEY FEEL IT IS MORE IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS
TO MAKE THE PRESENTS THAT THEY GIVE.
Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT LEARNED THIS IN GERMANY THIS SUMMER.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOM
ON CHRISTMAS EVE WE HAVE OUR RELATIVES
OVER TO OPEN PRESENTS. IN PREPARATION FOR THIS
WE PUT ALL THE PRESENTS UNDER THE TREE AND
CLOSE THE DOORS LEADING TO THE LIVING ROOM.
THE RELATIVES ENTER BY THE BACK DOOR AND GATHER
IN THE KITCHEN FOR A DRINK AND SOME TALK. WHEN
EVERYONE IS READY WE LINE UP AT THE DOOR,
YOUNGEST FIRST, AND GO INTO THE LIVING ROOM TO
OPEN THE PRESENTS. THE YOUNGEST GETS TO OPEN
THE FIRST GIFT AND THEN THE NEXT YOUNGEST
AND SO ON UNTIL EVERYONE HAS OPENED ONE
OF THEIR GIFTS. THEN IT STARTS OVER AND
CONTINUES UNTIL ALL THE GIFTS ARE GONE.

INFORMANT TOLD ME THAT IN BOTH HER OWN CHILDHOOD AND THAT OF HER
FATHER, THEY WOULD PUT A PAIR OF SHOES OUTSIDE THE DOOR FOR SANTA
CLAUS TO FILL WITH GOODIES. HER FATHER WOULD, HOWEVER, LAY
HIS SHOES BESIDE HIS BED BECAUSE SINCE HE ONLY HAD ONE PAIR OF
SHOES, HE DID NOT WANT THEM TO BE FROZEN OVER ON CHRISTMAS
MORNING FROM BEING OUTSIDE ALL NIGHT.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOM IN THE PHILIPPINES
AT CHRISTMAS TIME, ALL THE HOUSES ARE OPEN FOR ANYONE TO COME IN AND
EAT AS THEY WISH. THE PEOPLE CAN BE MERE PASSER-BYS OR FRIENDS. THE
TABLE IS LAID OUT FOR THE WHOLE DAY. CHILDREN GO FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE
COLLECTING DIMES, NICKELS, OR OTHER COINS AS A SYMBOL OF GIVING AT THE CHRISTMAS TIME. THIS IS DONE AT CHRISTMAS EVE, JUST LIKE YOUR

CAROLING
AMONG THE UKRAINIANS, ON CHRISTMAS DAY GROUPS OF CAROLERS VISIT THE
UKRAINIAN HOMES SINGING ANCIENT CAROLS AND BRINGING GREETINGS.
THEY CARRY WITH THEM A LARGE STAR OF BETHLEHEM, MADE OF COLORFUL
PAPER AND WOOD, LIT WITH A CANDLE (OR NOW AN ELECTIC LIGHT).
OR THE CAROLERS WILL CARRY A MINIATURE MANGER ("WERTEP") WITH
HAND CARVED WOODEN FIGURES. ANOTHER CUSTOM WHICH HAS ALMOST
PASSED AWAY IS THAT OF PRESENTING LITTLE SKITS WITH MEMBERS
OF THE GROUP DRESSED IN APPROPRIATE COSTUMES: AN ANGEL,
THREE KINGS, SHEPHERDS, AND A COMICAL CHARACTER FOR A TOUCH OF
HUMOUR.
