In the professor emeritus nomination letter, Professor Gregory Bozimowski, Department Coordinator and Program Director, Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia, wrote about Professor Michael Dosch’s teaching. “Dr. Dosch’s primary focus of teaching has been in several specialty areas of nurse anesthesia practice through lectures taught in the overall principles and pharmacology of anesthesia curriculum, most notably, inhalation agents, thoracic anesthesia, electrocardiogram interpretation, and anesthesia equipment. His expertise in the anesthesia gas machine gained him national notoriety and publications in the area. In addition, Dr. Dosch has taught the Physics and Bioinstrumentation of Anesthesia Course (ANE 7100), and with the programs transition to the doctoral degree in 2019, new online courses last year in Epidemiology and Population Health (ANE 7200 & ANE 7210), and this year in Analytic Methods for Evidence Based Practice (NUR 7450). Dr. Dosch compiled the median instructor rating table from course evaluations since 2018 displaying a 4.89 of possible 5. Student comments are very positive regarding his depth of knowledge and ability to convey it, and overall were very positive, noting that the courses were well-organized, and had clear relevance to their future career as nurse anesthetists. They note his ability to keep students engaged by asking questions and relaying instances from his current clinical practice.”

As an educator he is recognized for his specialized expertise especially as it relates to the complex science of inhalation therapy. Students have long revered his knowledge and practice expertise as demonstrated by his course evaluations. He consistently ranks near the top and students comment on his engagement, knowledge, and practice relevance” wrote Dr. Janet Baiardi, Interim Dean and Professor, College of Health Professions, McAuley School of Nursing.
DNP Program Coordinator, Dr. Karen Mihelich, wrote extensively about Dr. Dosch’s role as a well-respected educator with “Dr. Dosch has played integral role in the development of critical thinking skills in students and faculty. His approach as an educator is one of encouragement, integrity, and passion in caring for others. His practice is grounded within the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, helping students to recognize the importance of service. Dr. Dosch successfully integrates his broad professional experiences as a Nurse Anesthetist to provide students with insight to the importance of their role and endless opportunities that exist. I have had the honor of witnessing the growth and nurturing of our anesthesia students as they develop the critical thinking skills necessary to be clinicians and transformational leaders within the profession. His teaching and mentorship are highlighted as the Committee chair of many Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) projects and committee member to many additional students.”
Dr. Mihelich further notes: “As an academic and program leader, Dr. Dosch has emphasized the importance of performance outcomes in evaluating the nurse anesthesia program to drive change and ensure students and colleagues possess the necessary tools to navigate a complex health care environment. This is evident within the DNP program, where he has been able to build upon a strong foundation, evaluating to a program of excellence which is nationally recognized. Dr. Dosch has had impact across all tracks within the College of Health Professions (CHP) and university alike, leading initiatives to help navigate a path for university colleagues and students.”

Dr. Dosch has an impressive and long record of scholarship and service. Dr. Bozimowski’s nomination letter notes “Dr. Dosch contributes to Detroit Mercy’s worldwide reputation by his scholarship. His expertise in anesthesia equipment is widely recognized. Since 1918, he has published four articles (research, reviews, and a letter) in peer reviewed journals, two book chapters, two non-peer-reviewed articles, and two electronic publications which are used as course resources in many US nurse anesthesia programs. His article on passing the National Certification Examination on second attempt resulted in a change in policy by the nurse anesthesia professional accrediting organization (COA).” Dr. Dosch is recognized as an expert clinician. He has both regional and national recognition and according to his vitae is a frequent invited speaker. In 202l, he was honored by his peers as Program Director of the Year at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists National Congress.
Peer reviewed articles and letter noted in Dr. Dosch’s vitae are: “Treating increased inspired carbon dioxide” Anesth Analg (2021); “Considerations and checklist: Moving anesthesia machines from ambulatory surgery centers to hospitals” AANA Journal (2020); “Using the anesthesia workstation as a ventilator for critically ill patients – Technical considerations” AANA Journal (2020); and “Passing the National Certification Examination for Nurse Anesthetists on second attempt versus first attempt” CLEAR Exam Review (2018). The subject of book chapters written by Dr. Dosch are: Anesthesia equipment, Clinical Mathematics, and The Anesthesia Gas Machine.
Thirty-one national presentations, twenty-two regional presentations, and forty-six local presentations are recorded in Dr. Dosch’s vitae. Some of the subjects covered are volume vs pressure ventilation, pre-anesthesia checklist, using new anesthesia machines safely, new ventilation modes, problems seen with new anesthesia equipment, choosing among the new anesthesia gas machines, nurse anesthesia student attrition, anesthesia toys, clinical mathematics, update Doctorate of Nursing Practice Degree, current accreditation issues for Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs, basics of anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia, EKG interpretation, practice in computer-based testing improves scores on the National Certification Examination, awareness during anesthesia, and rescue breathing for infants and children.
“Dr. Dosch has a serious commitment to service at all levels” wrote Dr. Bozimowski in his emeritus nomination letter. He has served his students by procuring annual federal traineeship grants on their behalf totaling over $900,000 since1990. He served on McAuley School of Nursing committees since 2018 such as PEIT (chair 2021-22), P&T Committee, and Graduate Curriculum committee, and Physician Assistant of Grievance Policy Revision task force (chair), 11.6 committee (chair), and Physician Assistant Admissions Committee. He has served the University as a member of the STAR committee (Advancement), and the University Promotion and Tenure committee.”
The nomination letter continues “He has served his profession nationally as a chair on-site reviewer and annual report task force member for nurse anesthesia accreditors, the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA), and Editorial Committee & Peer Review Board of the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA Journal) and regionally, elected Secretary/Treasurer & Finance Committee chair, Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA). He has served as an external reviewer for faculty seeking promotion at Oregon Health Science University, and as a legal consultant.”

Certification and Licensure is a necessary requirement for a practicing nurse and nurse anesthesia. Dr. Dosch licensures include Certified Critical Care Nurse (1984-87); Registered Nurse, Ohio (1984-85); Registered Nurse, Minnesota (1985-86); Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (1983 to present); Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (1988 to present); National Board for Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist (1988-2020); Registered Nurse, Michigan (1981 to present); and Nurse Anesthetist, Michigan (1988 to present). To present refers to the point at which Dr. Dosch was honored with emeritus status.

Granting the rank of Professor Emeritus to Dr. Dosch will allow the continuation of his mentorship and contributions to the wonderful work that our university is so well known for” wrote Dr. Mihelich.
