Citation:

Alex Dow, distinguished citizen of Detroit, Honorary Doctor of Engineering of the University of Michigan, who by his intellectual force, courage and determination, has risen from humble beginnings to a high place in the industrial and scientific world; internationally recognized as an outstanding developer of the science of producing and distributing electrical energy for the domestic and industrial use of his fellow citizens; constant promoter of research to discover new improvements, to apply new inventions, and to effect new economies; advocate before the world of a sound financial structure in the public utilities field; active also in the sphere of public service especially by furthering the development of the new system of public water supply recently inaugurated at the Springwells Station - is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Science, for the sake of honor, and to be placed on the roll of those upon whom the University has conferred its academic distinction.
