Joining the University of Detroit in 1969 as an Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Lin was promoted to Associate Professor in 1976, and earned the rank of full Professor in 1986. He served as the Chair of the Department twice, from August 1982 - August 1985 and August 1997 – August 2001.
While on the faculty of the University of Detroit he spent six months (6/1979-1/1980) as a Visiting Professor and Specialist, Electrical Engineering Department National Taiwan University where he developed the microwave labs and the course on EM-wave propagation. During the summers of 1976 and 1977 he was a NASA/ASEE Summer Research Fellow in Communications and Navigation Division, NASA Goodard Flight Center Research on the design of a Microwave Antenna for a weather satellite for measuring the temperature distribution of earth and atmosphere.
Dr. Lin earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (1959) from the National Taiwan University, Taipei Taiwan; and both a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (1966) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering (1969) from Michigan State University, East Lansing Michigan.
“To teach well and care about my students” was a focus of Dr. Lin’s. He developed a number of courses for the department, including Fundamentals of ECE, Electromagnet Field Theory Advance Electromagnetic Field Theory, Advanced Electronics, and Electromagnetic Compatibility. In addition, he taught Electric Circuits I and II, Principle of Electrical Engineering, and Electrons I and II.
He was selected for the Faculty Award for Excellence, College of Engineering & Science in 1989.
His research was published in IEEE Transaction on Electromagnetic, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, The Journal of Microwave Power, and IEEE Transaction on Antenna and Propagation. His papers were accepted by refereed conferences and symposia such as IEEE International Union of Radio Science Symposium, IEEE-APS/URSI Symposium, International Microwave Power Conference, International IEEE/CAP Symposium.
Serving as a committee member both for the department and the university was a faculty responsibility supported by Dr. Lin. He served on the Program Review Committee of the University Prioritization Task Force, UDMPU Board and Negotiation Team, was a IEEE/UD student counselor, Eta Kappa Nu faculty advisor, ASEE campus activity coordinator, and was on the University Tenure and Promotion Committee for eighteen years.
In his Professor Emeritus nomination letter for Dr. Lin, Leo Hanifin, Dean, College of Engineering and Science noted “His dedication, wise council, and compassion would be attested to by a myriad of individuals…C.J.’s teaching has always been exceptional. His ability to make complex topics both interesting and accessible is unparalleled. In addition, he has always been willing to teach any course needed, and has done so well. He has had a steady and respected scholarly career with publication in the most prestigious venues in the EE profession.”
In a letter of support for the nomination, the author wrote “My strongest recollection of Dr. Lin is his remarkable ability as a mentor to both junior faculty and students. As I continued to work at UDM and rose through the ranks, I cannot remember too many professional situations for which he was not there doing what he does best – providing guidance and advice on the best course of action. I have similarly watched him be a teacher and father figure to students over the years, applying just the right combination of firmness and compassion in his dealings with them.”
The author of another letter of support noted “From a student’s perspective, I can say that Dr. Lin always demands hard work in his classes, yet treats the students with compassion and respect. He is superbly organized lecturer who always manages to communicate even the most complicated materials in a clear fashion. And when the lecture periods are insufficient to elucidate the more difficult topics, Dr. Lin is always available, without complaint, outside the classroom.
He held membership as an IEEE Life Senior Member (2001) with Antennas and Propagation Society, the Electron Devices Society, and Microwave Theory Society. He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Phi both Engineering National Honor Societies. He served as Vice Chair and then Chair of IEEE SEM Antennas & Propagation, Electron Devices, and Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies.
Dr. Lin’s Professor Emeritus status was confirmed on August 17, 2009 by Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., President, University of Detroit Mercy.
