Bio:
Sr. Michelin joined Mercy College of Detroit as an Assistant Professor in 1949 teaching Chemistry and Physics. She was later promoted to Associate Professor. She served as Chairman of the Natural Science Department (1953-1955) and Chairman of the Department of Chemistry (1960-1964). She received the 1965 Teacher of the Year Award from Mercy College’s Department of Education and the 1968 Alumnae Faculty of the Year Award.
Sr. Michelin earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1947 from Mercy College of Detroit and an M.A. in Chemistry in 1949 from Catholic University of America. In addition, she completed courses at Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti Michigan, Mt. Mercy College Grand Rapids, University of Notre Dame Notre Dame Indiana, University of California Berkley California, and Wayne State University Detroit Michigan.
Documents indicate that students found one of her courses “intellectually challenging. Presentations were interesting, pertinent, and adequate. They enjoyed the relevancy of biochemistry, the many applications to daily living, and the inclusion of materials on current research in biochemistry.” “The students appreciated the availability and willingness of Sr. Michelin to help them.” Other students found her course “valuable in deepening their understanding, gaining new insights, learning how to correlate and relate facts and principle to other related sciences.”
There were numerous activities beyond teaching in which Sr. Michelin participated. These include Moderator of Sodality (1949-1955), Manager of the College Bookstore (1958-1964), and committees including Freshmen Orientation – Testing, Admissions, Allocation of Facilities, Planning Committee for the new science building, student center, bookstore, Scholarship, Promotion and Tenure, and Commencement.
Her professional memberships included American Chemical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Society of Sigma Xi.
Mercy College of Detroit’s 1978 contract provided by Sr. Agnes Mary Mansour, R.S.M., President, Mercy College of Detroit, noted Sr. Michelin’s position would be Associate Professor Emeritus and Assistant in Developmental Services. The letters was dated July 26, 1978. The last contract letter in Sr. Michelin’ file is dated for the academic year of 1978-1988.
