Professor, McAuley School of Nursing, University of Detroit Mercy

Distinguished Professor

2015

Bio:

Dr. Groh studied at Wayne State University and University of Michigan and received bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in nursing with specialization in psychiatric mental health nursing.  Her career at the University began in 1996 with an appointment in the physician assistant program.  In 2004, she moved to the McAuley School of Nursing.

Dr. Groh’s research interests are focused on the mental health of women.  Her recent research projects include evaluating the effectiveness of a lifestyle change program for obese African American women; the relationship between vitamin D and depression; the role of self-efficacy in mediating depression in persons diagnosed with diabetes, and developing an Android app for pregnant women and new mothers to assist in identifying postpartum depression.  She has numerous publications on various aspects of women’s mental health as well as service learning as a pedagogical approach to learning.  She has international experience in Iceland as a Fulbright Scholar and in Ireland, as a U.S. expert on the relationship between women’s mental health and poverty.  In addition, she and colleagues from the College of Health Professions planned and implemented a medical mission to Guyana in 2014 with a second mission trip planned for spring 2016.

Dr. Groh has made a significant impact on the health of Detroiters in her capacity as project director for the McAuley Health Center, a nurse-managed center sponsored by the McAuley School of Nursing and located on the east side of Detroit.  Groh has secured over $2 million, yes over two million, in federal and foundation grants to eliminate health disparities in the patient population.  Many of these programs have been innovative and cutting-edge, establishing benchmarks for similar type clinics.  Congratulations, Dr. Groh.

Carla requested acknowledgement of the Deans and her colleagues in the College of Health Professions for their on-going support and inspiration.  It is a privilege and honor to be part of such a stellar team of healthcare colleagues.

Dr. Groh's nomination was presented by Pamela Zarkowski, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Distinguished Professor designation was approved and conferred by Dr. Antoine M. Garibaldi, President of University of Detroit Mercy on August 17, 2015.
