Professor Arthur C. Haman has the longest tenure of any faculty member in UD/UDM’s history with 58 years of service to the College, University, and community. During that time, he served as an Instructor, Assistant and Associate Professor, and for twenty-eight years Professor in Mechanical Engineering. At various times, he also served as Chair of Mechanical Engineering, Acting Chair of Civil Engineering, Acting Chair of Electrical Engineering, and Acting Dean of the College.
During his tenure as a faculty member, Professor Haman taught over 600 classes to over 12,000 students. Student evaluations show that he “was strict but fair, and dedicated to student learning.” In recognition of his teaching excellence, Professor Haman has received the UD/UDM Cornerstone Award twice, was named College Teacher of the Year three times, and designated Engineer of the Century in the College.
The current Dean of the College of Engineering and Science, Gary Kuleck, noted in his support letter that Professor Haman “counts the number of students that he has engaged in teaching and projects not in numbers, but in generations. I have encountered many of his former students who received their degrees in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s, many of whom have fond memories of his dedication to student success through teaching and mentorship.” Much of the support received from mechanical engineering graduates “is based, to a large extent, on their recognition of Professor Haman as an important factor in the educational grounding that they received at UD/UDM to go on to successful careers.”
In a support letter, the author wrote: “Professor Haman’s service during his entire career at UD/UDM to the College of Engineering and Science has been exemplary. It is noteworthy that he has received commendations and notes of appreciation from many of the Deans under whom he has served, from leadership in his professional work and activities with TARDEC and a number of other academic and government institutions. He has overseen many major projects ranging from the installation of the 10 W solar pan system on the Engineering Building’s roof, to the liaison for projects such as the Ford Advanced Computer and Teaching Center and the Pico Manufacturing Laboratory. He has devoted his time unselfishly to necessary projects throughout the College that have helped to maintain its appearance and functionality for students.”
Professor Haman’s service to the community is outstanding. His single greatest accomplishment is his service as one of the founding members of the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP). DAPCEP has been instrumental in launching many students on careers in engineering and science over the years. He has been at the center of the program’s success.
Professor Haman served as a consultant in the design, development, and product evaluation in the area of Flame Arrestors/External Ignition Protection for automotive, industrial, and marine engines and associated equipment for many corporations including, but not limited, to Bendix, Ford Motor, Yamaha Motors, Volvo-Penta, Kawasaki Motors, Chrysler, and Stewart-Warner. He also served as an expert witness for ten law firms.
Professor Haman has earned Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degrees from University of Detroit and a Master of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Southern California. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering in Michigan. He has been a visiting professor at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and Dartmouth College. He was honored as the Engineering Teacher of the Year in 1964, 1967, and 1973.
Arthur C. Haman’s nomination for Professor Emeritus was approved and conferred by Dr. Antoine M. Garibaldi, President of University of Detroit Mercy on August 17 2015. Professor Haman entered eternal life on Febrary 24, 2022.
