Spirit of UDM: Alumni Achievement Award

Bio:

A senior vice president of Beaumont Health System, Nancy A. Susick, M.S.N., R.N. ’86 is the first female and the first nurse to serve as president of a Beaumont hospital. She oversees operations at the 458-bed Troy hospital and its ambulatory, diagnostic and surgery centers.

Before becoming president in April 2012, she was vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer at Beaumont Hospital, Troy. In these positions, she was responsible for operations and nursing practice. Under her leadership, the Troy hospital has achieved Magnet designation, the highest recognition for nursing excellence. Beaumont ranks as one of U.S. News & World Report’s "Best Hospitals" for the 19th year in a row.

Susick earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College of Detroit in 1986 and a Master of Science in Nursing from Oakland University. She shares her expertise with educational institutions, professional organizations and students. Susick volunteers as a coach/mentor to high school students, nursing and healthcare administration students, and military personnel. She is past chair of the Oakland University School of Nursing Advisory Board, a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, and a member of both the Michigan Organization of Nurse Executives and the Naval Reserve Association.

Susick retired in 2012 as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve after 24 years of service, where she held multiple leadership positions. She was the first U.S. Navy Captain and female to receive the Spirit of America Award in recognition of her excellence and leadership in her military and civilian roles and her contributions to her community.

Susick was also recognized with the American College of Health Care Executives’ Regents Award in 2012. She and her husband, Al, also a retired Reservist, reside in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Graduate of Mercy College of Detroit ‘86 College of Health Professions Nancy A. Susick was honored with the Spirit of UDM: Alumni Achievement Award on April 11, 2014.

Citation:

Nancy A. Susick has had an exemplary 27-year career as a registered nurse and nursing administrator, holding various leadership positions within Beaumont Health System. She is the first female and nurse to serve as president of Beaumont Hospital, Troy.

Highly respected by her colleagues, she is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing her contributions as an innovative health care executive and business leader who drives change and creates opportunities.

A retired Captain of the United States Navy Reserve with 24 years of service, she has earned multiple military awards, including being the first female and the first U.S. Navy Captain to receive the Spirit of America award for excellence and leadership.

Strongly committed to education and community service, she volunteers in her community school districts, and has launched a work program for special needs students. She also coaches nursing and healthcare administration students and military personnel in education and career development.
