Mercy Medallion

1989

Citation:

Evelyn J. Fisher, M.D. is an infectious disease specialist at Henry Ford Hospital who has labored tirelessly to solve problems associated with AIDS.

Looking beyond the symptoms of the disease, Dr. Fisher realized from the first case the destructiveness of people’s perceptions of those afflicted with AIDS. In 1984, Dr. Fisher responded to those needs by co-founding Wellness Networks, Inc., a support group aimed at dealing with the medical and social problems associated with AIDS. She is also their Medical Director and sits on their Board of Directors.

Her dedication to improve the quality of life for her patients and their families has led her to work more stringently to alleviate the strains caused by the disease. She has held countless information and prevention seminars about AIDS for people from all walks of life and has authored numerous publications—the majority dealing with AIDS. She had lobbied for more research funding, and helped establish confidential blood testing sites in the Detroit Area. She was named to Governor Blanchard’s Expert Committee on AIDS in 1985 and also serves on the AIDS Task Force for Provider Education in Michigan. She is a consultant to several large and private industries and to Jackson Prison.

Dr. Fisher’s service to the community also encompasses twelve years as staff physician at Chass Clinic, a Latino Public Health Clinic and Medical Director of Pallister-Lodge Methadone Clinic Henry Ford Hospital. Additionally, she is the unofficial advisor to Detroit City Council regarding AIDS and a panel member for Legislative public forums regarding AIDS.

A compassionate healer, Dr. Evelyn Fisher’s commitment to others had earned her the honor of being named Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News in 1985 and receiving the Detroit Science Center Trailblazer Award in 1987.

A 23-year veteran physician, Dr. Fisher received her doctor of medicine from Wayne State University. Her postdoctoral training was completed at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and Henry Ford Hospital. She is also a clinical associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan.

Award was presented at the 1989 Works of Mercy Dinner.
