Josephine Van Dyke Brownson, alumna of the Religious of the Sacred Heart and of the University of Michigan, grand-daughter of Orestes A. Brownson, distinguished American Catholic apologist; grand-daughter of James A. Van Dyke, a pioneer mayor of Detroit and noted lawyer of his period; daughter of Major Henry Brownson, soldier, lawyer and litterateur; for many years teacher in the public schools of this city; always generously devoted to the social betterment of the under-privileged, not only by the direction of settlements and welfare movements, but in a religious way by the founding, directing and promoting of Catholic catechetical instruction among those deprived of systematic religious education, is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, and to be enrolled on the list of those whom the University of Detroit has deemed worthy of social distinction.
