Charles F. Whitten’s persistence in the field of medical research as Program Director of the Wayne State University Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center is exemplary of the Works of Mercy and its values, such as improving the condition of humanity by promoting programs for educational excellence, addressing health, cultural or environmental concerns and caring for people, particularly the young and elderly. While promoting these values, he has been the driving force behind a quest to find the cure to the blood disease, Sickle Cell Anemia. He has discover many new ways of treating and dealing with the disease as documented in numerous publications and his work has contributed to a better understanding of the disease for thousands of people worldwide. His dedication to this worthy effort has earned him numerous honors and awards, including the Detroit Medical Society’s Physician of the Year, the Detroit NAACP’s Distinguished Achievement Award, the Detroit Urban League’s Distinguished Warrior Award and Wayne State University’s Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics. His membership and appointments to a countless list of national, state and local committees and boards serve to recognize his contributions in medicine to society.
