Mother General of the Religious Sister of Mercy of the Union

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1966

Citation:

Mother Mary Regina, the Mother General of over seven thousand Sisters engaged in the works of mercy in the United States, Central and South America, and the West Indies; teacher, educational administrator, guiding spirit in the improvement of schools, hospitals, and social services, and in the efficiency of personnel management; active leader and associate in the initiation and furtherance of the Sister Formation and Better World movements; sponsor of the community changes essential to the inauguration of the aggiornamento defined by the contemporary pontiffs and the Vatican Councils, Mercy College of Detroit esteems her as one of the ablest, most energetic, and most versatile religious women of today. Our College aims not at leisure but at leadership and it stresses the importance of dedication to service in the interest of others. We have chosen to honor her today because we have the conviction that she exemplifies with distinction this ideal which was that of Catherine McAuley, the first Sister of Mercy, and for which our College stands. By the authority vested in me as President of Mercy College of Detroit, I now admit you to the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, and request that your name be inscribed upon the first list of honorable alumni of this College. Commencement, Mercy College of Detroit, June 5, 1966.
