Judge, United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan
1977
Citation:
Your long and distinguished career in public life has marked you as one of the University's most notable graduates. Your record of service includes broad and varied experience; as a U.S. Attorney, as an attorney in private practice and as a distinguished Federal Judge. You have gained the respect and admiration of both the public you serve so selflessly and fellow practitioners in one of our nation's most demanding professions. In addition, you have been a true son of the University of Detroit's best traditions. An outstanding athlete and leader during your student years, you became a loyal and devoted alumnus. Your support and diligent behind-the-scenes work on behalf of the University and the School of Law has been remarkable. The Law School itself, its faculty and students, all owe much to your quiet leadership which has often provided sorely needed support to school projects over the years. You have, indeed, returned much to the school which gave you a start on your notable career. Reverend President, it is my privilege to present the Honorable Thomas P. Thornton for the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Commencement, University of Detroit, School of Law, May 21, 1977.
