Background information was provided by Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Sloman, widow of Adolph Sloman's grandson, during a telephone interview on August 15, 2008. Mr. Adolph Sloman was a native Detroiter born September 18, 1859. He was educated in the Detroit Schools and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1879. Sloman studied under Robert G. Toms; worked with Brennan & Donnelly. Not yet twenty, Sloman applied to be a member of the Michigan Bar. Because the minimum age to be a member of the bar was twenty-one, Thomas Cooley, Dean of the Law School, argued that because of Sloman's brilliance he should be admitted. Sloman was known as the 'Bulldog of Michigan" because he never lost a case, even if the case went to the Supreme Court. He was the original attorney for the J.L. Hudson Co. incorporation. He retired in 1921. Sloman taught in the University of Detroit Law School for six years, specializing in wills and estate law. The Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree was conferred on Mr. Sloman during Commencement, University of Detroit, June 20, 1917.
