Citation:
In your more than 40 years of service to the Society of Jesus, you have excelled in three outstanding careers: theologian, university president and religious leader. As teacher and scholar you have molded the lives of many grateful students. In your capacity as general assistant of the Society of Jesus, and countless times its Vicar General, you have greatly contributed to the excellence of Jesuit institutions in many lands. Proficient in languages and skilled in diplomacy you have been an ambassador of both the church and education throughout the world. Twice electing you to high office, Jesuits from every region have shown their faith in you. Many universities have also paid tribute to your remarkable talents, recognizing your extraordinary ability to promote unity and understanding by explaining the church to the world and the world to the church. It is with great pride and gratitude for your many achievements that the president f the University of Detroit hereby confers upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 11, 1985.
