Background Information is taken from a University of Detroit Public Relations Department "New Release" of May 6, 1974. "A graduate of Yale University, Gov. Milliken has received honorary degrees from the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University, Detroit Institute of Technology and Northern Michigan. He is a member of the Board of Counselors of Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, and served for three years as a trustee of Northwestern Michigan College. He was the 1971-72 chairman of the Republican Governor's Association and in 1973 was named one of three governors to develop suggestions for a National Energy Policy. In 1972 and 1973, he was elected to the Executive Committee of the National Governors' Conference. In 1971 and 1973, he was elected chairman of the Upper Great Lakes Regional Commission. Prior to being names governor in January, 1969, Governor Milliken had been Lieutenant Governor of the State of Michigan." The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws was presented to Governor Milliken during Commencement, University of Detroit, May 11, 1974.
