Governor of the sovereign State of Michigan, Bachelor of Laws of the University of Notre Dame, and more recently National President of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, Second Lieutenant, Infantry, in the First World War, winning the award of the Military Order of the Purple heart and the Croix de Guerre with Palm; who by his competent and conscientious public service advanced progressively to positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in that of the Chief Executive of this state, who in this latter high capacity has met the serious problems of a war-time administration with wisdom and statesmanship and human sympathy, and always with fidelity to the highest standards of democratic government is recommended for the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.
