Provincial, Detroit Province, Society of Jesus
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
1989
Citation:
From the time you entered the Society of Jesus in 1948 until your ordination in 1961, you developed a deep and abiding interest in the roles of spirituality in our changing world. As a teacher, guest lecturer and author, you have challenged and helped others toward meaningful examinations of their own value systems. A nationally acclaimed speaker on Jesuit education and spirituality, you have also served as Vice President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men and served on the staffs of many church affiliated schools and organizations. Since your days at St. Ignatius School in Cleveland, then on to Loyola University in Chicago, you have always maintained close ties to the Detroit area. You were dean of Colombiere College in Clarkston during the mid-60s, and from 1968-1972, you were director of studies for the Detroit Jesuit Province. This bond with the Detroit community continues today in your office as Provincial for the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus. For your continued dedication to the Jesuit ideals of educational excellence, with gratitude and admiration, we confer upon you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 13 1989.
