Citation:
Your longstanding dedication to education began in your early years when you entered the Society of Jesus in 1939. Your studies at Woodstock College in Maryland and your love of the classics prepared you for a long career of teaching classical languages, literature and art which you continue to do today at Loyola Chicago. In 1952 you were ordained at St. Albert de Louvain in Belgium and then studied Spiritual Theology in Germany before returning to the University of Chicago to earn your Ph.D. Your outstanding career in academia led you to be dean at Wernersville Novitiate and Georgetown University and later Academic Vice President at Georgetown. For fourteen years, you were a leader in Jesuit education by serving president of Fairfield University and St. Louis University where you are remembered for strengthening the vitality of the University. Your professionalism and outstanding achievements have been recognized throughout the academic community with numerous honorary degrees. You have served on many boards of colleges and universities including eight years on the board of trustees at the University of Detroit. Your commitment to Jesuit higher education for over 50 years has earned you the respect of all your colleagues and for that we gratefully and confer upon you in this Ignatian anniversary year the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Commencement, University of Detroit Mercy, May 11, 1991.
