After practicing law privately for five years, Carl Levin was appointed as assistant Michigan attorney general and general counsel for the Michigan Civil Right Commission. For two years he was a special assistant attorney general of Michigan and chief appellate attorney for the Defender's Office of Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit. Elected to Detroit City Council in 1969 and re-elected in 1973, Mr. Levin served as Council President for the next four years. He was elected to the U.s. Senate in November 1978. Carl Levin's move from President of the Detroit City Council directly to the U.S. Senate was unprecedented in Michigan political history. He was member of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and Chairman, Oversight of Government Management Subcommittee. Carl Levin presents thoughtful arguments and has built a reputation as a workhorse. In addition to his political accomplishments, he has been a strong supporter of the arts in Detroit.
