Mr. Donald L. Byerlein is a Sales Representative with The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. where he has been employed since 1951. He received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Commerce & Finance of the University in 1949. He was President of the U. of D. Alumni Association in 1959-60 and a Member of the Board of Directors from 1957-61. He is also a past President of the “D” Club, 1954-56; Member of the Development Council; Season ticket committee for basketball and the former football programs; Alumni Concert and Alumni Day committees; and the Metropolitan Alumni Club to list a few.
His business and professional association include: Member of Equitable Life’s Leaders Corp.; National Quality Award Recipient for twelve consecutive years; Member of the National Association of Life Underwriters’ and the Detroit Life Underwriters’; and in June of 1968, he will receive his Chartered Life Underwriter designation from the American College of Life underwriters. While a student at the U. of D., Mr. Byerlein won three letters in football and four in baseball. In 1947, he was awarded the Loyalty Award in Football. He joined the magi Fraternity while at the University and is currently active in the Alumni Chapter.
He is a Member of the Holy Name Parish in Birmingham, where he is also a Parish Commentator and a past Board Member of the Parent-Teachers Guild. In 1954-55, he served as Chairman of the Archdiocesan Development Fund for the visitation Parish. Mr. Byerlein is married to the former Phyllis Lyons (a U. of D. Arts and Sciences graduate of 1948). They reside with their four children in Birmingham, Michigan. Through the years he has been a most loyal and dedicated supporter of the University, and has made himself available for any task requested of him. The Alumni Association takes great pride in honoring Donald Byerlein this evening, an honor overdue for a wonderful and exuberant person greatly admired by all that know him.
