Upon Chester Harris Sample, doctor of Medicine, for that he has shown in a long career in the practice of his profession, notable knowledge and skill, particularly in the art of prophylaxis, and especially for that in all his career he has put the welfare of his suffering fellows above the desires of honor or of personal gain, especially for that for over fifty years he has served without emolument the poor orphans of St. Vincent's Asylum, Saginaw, Michigan, for that in this he has shown the most essential quality of an excellent physician, unselfish devotion to the suffering, the University of Detroit confers the degree of Doctor of Laws, for the sake of honor.
