Your longstanding dedication to advancing the frontiers of dental science has earned you an international reputation as a leader in dental research and training. As Director of the National Institute of Dental Research since 1983, you have molded the Institute into one of the strongest and most productive research units at the National Institutes of Health. You have authored more than 260 articles on dental research and are in constant demand as a lecturer worldwide. A strong proponent of quality education, you are a longtime friend of dental schools in the United States and abroad. At various times throughout your distinguished career, you have held positions as dean or department director at dental schools in the United States and Europe. In 1989, you received the prestigious Royal Norwegian Order of Merit from the King of Norway. You also have been accorded the U.S. Surgeon General's Exemplary Award Medal, the Swedish Dental Society International Prize and the International Lecturer of the Year Award from the Academy of International Dental Studies, to name only a few awards and recognitions. For your noteworthy contributions to dental research on behalf of humanity, the University of Detroit School of Dentistry is proud to confer upon you an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
