Background information is taken from correspondence in university archive files and materials provided by the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Thomas R. Carey Council #4764, Lake Orion Michigan. Father Carey was born in Blyth, Ontario, Canada, November 15, 1880. He was ordained on June 6, 1908. He became the pastor of St. Philip new mission in Lapeer on Nov. 3, 1923. Fr. Carey received his A.B. degree from the University of Detroit in 1904. Fr. Carey was first spiritual director of the Detroit Diocesan Holy Name Society. He was the first president of the Catholic Rural Life Conference and director of the Detroit Community Fund. He organized the Catholic Charities of Detroit. He built three rectories at Oxford, Imlay City and Davison, Michigan. Rev. Carey was honored for his work in Religion and Social Services. Jubilee Celebration, University of Detroit, October 11, 1927.
