Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff, City of Detroit

Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

2001

Citation:

Your sense of civic responsibility and wealth of business knowledge, combined with your commitment to education and the arts, have distinguished you as an outstanding contributor to the Detroit community. Since joining the City of Detroit's leadership team in 1994 when Mayor Dennis Archer appointed you deputy mayor and chief administrative officer, you have demonstrated your unwavering dedication to the city and its citizens. You have successfully utilized your extensive experience in the corporate world as director of government relations for General Motors Corporation and in your current position as chief operating officer and chief of staff for the City of Detroit. Known for your perseverance, efficiency and great style, you skillfully oversee the operation of twenty city departments with a focus on providing local residents and businesses with top quality, cost-effective services. As a strong supporter of education, you have demonstrated your personal commitment to the University of Detroit Mercy. Last year, you spoke eloquently at our "Celebrate Spirit" event. And, more recently, your interest in neighborhood improvement and support of the University led to your participation in a city-county task force formed to help rejuvenate selected area, including the Livernois and Six Mile business and residential district. In addition to your professional responsibilities, you have assumed a leadership role in numerous community organizations, including the Detroit Institute of Arts Commission, Charles W. Wright Museum of African American History, DIA Friends of African and American Art, Detroit Medical Center, Focus HOPE, Karmanos Cancer Institute, United Way and University Cultural Center Association. In recognition of your distinguished service to the City of Detroit and your contributions to improve the quality of life for all Detroit area residents, the University of Detroit Mercy is pleased to present you with the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit Mercy, May 12, 2001.
