Bio:
Professor Richard Broughton joined the School of Law as an Assistant Professor in 2010. During his time at the School of Law, he has emerged as both an outstanding teacher and a prolific and accomplished scholar.
Professor Broughton, who teaches in the areas of constitutional law, criminal law, and criminal procedure, has won every teaching award given at the School of Law. The Student Bar Association has named him Professor of the Year in Academic Years 2013-2014 and 2015-2016; it also named him upper level Professor of the Year in 2011-2012. Both the Law Review and the Moot Court Board named him Professor of the Year in 2011-2012. His teaching evaluations describe him as “hands down one of the best professors at this school” and as “show[ing] passion and excitement about teaching and do[ing] an excellent job ensuring that students understand the material.” Faculty members who have attended his classes invariably comment on his knowledge of and passion for his subject matter, his rapport with students, and his engaging and organized lectures.
Professor Broughton is also a prolific and well regarded scholar. His scholarship focuses on issues of federal criminal law and the intersection of American politics and constitutionalism. His work has been published in high quality journals, including law reviews and scholarly law journals at Harvard, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Richmond, and the universities of Virginia, Florida, Connecticut, and Oklahoma. He presents regularly at conferences throughout the United States, including the annual Constitutional Law Colloquium held at Loyola University Chicago School of Law; the Midwest Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Chicago; the Central States Law School Association Annual Scholarship Conference; and symposia at numerous law schools. He enjoys a national reputation in his field; and he received the Barnes Faculty Scholar Award from the School of Law in 2014.
Broughton is also a leader within the School of Law. He recently was appointed to serve as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He has served on several important committees, including the Faculty Recruitment Committee (as Chair), the Dean Search Committee, and the Curriculum Committee. Students seek him out, and he always answers the call. He has served as a faculty advisor for The Federalist Society, as a coach for several Moot Court teams, and as a Note advisor for many Law Review students.
Professor Broughton’s contributions and accomplishments have enriched and inspired students, faculty, and administration at the School of Law and throughout the University. We are grateful that he is our colleague.
