Background information is taken from a University of Detroit press release in archive files. Best known for his work as Secretary of the Interior for eight years in the administrations of President John F. Kennedy and President Lyndon B. Johnson, Mr. Udall, is a strong proponent of the total environment approach to conservation, a concept which demands thinking large enough to relate conservation to the overriding issues of our age. In his book, 1976: Agenda for Tomorrow, Udall States: "You cannot save the land unless you save the people. True conservation begins wherever the people are and with whatever trouble they are in." Udall, currently a visiting professor at Yale University, also founded The Overview Group in 1969 to pioneer in the field of international consulting for governments and industries concerned with creating a better environment for man. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, an attorney, avid reader and equally avid outdoorsman. Mr. Udall received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
