Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Engineering & Science
2007
Bio:
Matthew Mio’s ties to the University go back to the mid-1990s when he was an undergraduate in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Mio was active in many areas of student life. In addition to being an officer in the Chemistry Club, he wrote for the Varsity News and ultimately became an Editor. He also was coauthor of the UDM fight song and alma mater.
Dr. Mio has the reputation as an excellent, although “tough” teacher, and he is continually assessing techniques that work well in the classroom. When the chemistry faculty decided to pick different themes for our non-science major course, “Chemistry in Society,” Dr. Mio developed a forensic chemistry course entitled “CSI: Detroit.” Students still learn the fundamentals of chemistry, but he also invites professional forensics experts to speak about their everyday experiences.
He has accepted a number of undergraduates into his research lab and their work has paid off in several presentations at regional and national scientific meetings. Dr. Mio encourages the undergraduates to attend these meetings and present the papers with him, thus giving his students a taste of the professional world of chemistry. His students also present their work at the College of Engineering and Science Research Symposia and at local American Chemical Society student research days.
Dr. Mio has been an excellent citizen of the University. He has been a comoderator of the Chemistry Club, which is a very active organization with a variety of professional, service and social activities ongoing. Under his directorship, the Chemistry Club has been awarded “Outstanding Chapter” status several times by the American Chemical Society - a distinction reserved for only approximately 25 of over 300 active student chapters in the nation. Dr. Mio has also served on a number of departmental and college committees and is currently active in several University Shared Governance committees and task forces.
Dr. Matthew Mio is committed to the Mission and ideals of the University and is a credit to UDM.
Dr. Mio was presented the award by Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., President, University of Detroit Mercy on November 2, 2007.
