Justice, Michigan Supreme Court

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1992

Citation:

Your career as a highly respected, dedicated and accomplished attorney reached a milestone in 1990 when you were named as Associate Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. At that time, Governor James Blanchard referred to you as "someone I trust to do the right thing," and you continue today to serve the cause of justice with distinction, courage and commitment. Before your appointment to the bench, you served with two of the state's most prominent law firms - first with Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone and then as a partner with Jaffe, Raitt & Heuer. Your concern for your community is exemplified by your work as Senior Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Detroit and Director of Legal and Governmental Affairs for the Governor of Michigan. Your diverse legal background in both the private and public sectors provides you with a broad view of our legal system and enables you to interpret the law for today's society with skill and compassion. After attending Michigan's parochial and public schools, you earned your bachelor's degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and your master's degree in public administration and your law degree from the University of Southern California. After receiving your education in California, you returned to your home state to become an active, contributing member of our legal and civic community - not to mention an avid supporter of the Detroit Tigers and Lions! For your continued commitment to legal excellence and professionalism, we bestow upon you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Commencement, University of Detroit Mercy, School of Law, May 10, 1992.
