Bio:
A lifelong communicator, you have harnessed the power of the written word, using that power to instill pride among thousands of black people. The magazines Black World, Ebony and Jet have been your vehicle, while self-esteem and equality have been your message, since you began your publishing career in 1942. Four presidents have recognized your diplomatic skills asking you to carry the spirit of unity and understanding to Africa in 1957, Russia and Poland in 1959, the Ivory Coast in 1961 and Kenya in 1963. You extended your public commitment to continue serving on the National Selective Service Commission in 1966 and on the Presidential Commission observing the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations in 1970. You have continued to spread your influence and high ideals in several other business concerns: as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Supreme Life Insurance, President of WJPC – Chicago’s first and only black-owned radio station – and through the cosmetic company, Fashion Fair. Throughout your life you have given generously of your skills and talents in numerous philanthropic roles ranging from Trustee of the Art institute of Chicago to member of the Advisory Council of the Harvard School of Business. We join the many organizations that have honored you for your ability to rise to the top of your profession while working within a sometimes flawed system and for combining the skills of a publisher with the expertise of a businessman and the compassion of a humanitarian.
Award was presented at the President’s Cabinet Annual Awards Dinner, May 19, 1984.
