Citation:
Ours is a generation that has seen higher education move from being the privileged attainment of a few to becoming the cherished achievement of all who have the capacity and the desire to reach out to broader visions. To bring these visions within the grasp of many students, you have specialized in expanding the federal student loan program and furthering the growth of developing institutions. And throughout the recent era when cooperative education has emerged as one of the brightest and soundest ideas of contemporary higher education, you have been both innovator and energetic supporter of cooperative education programs that have begun to flourish in hundreds of colleges across the face of America. Through cooperative education a college student's degree work is tied in with his or her career in an intensely realistic and mutually supportive way. Theory is shaped to the concrete imperatives of the world of work, and study is vitalized and enriched with the fruit of practical experience. The University of Detroit, already in 1911, pioneered in making cooperative training an integral part of its engineering curriculum; in recent years we have extended cooperative education to all areas of Arts and Sciences, Business and Administration, and Architecture. It is fitting today that this University recognize your preeminent contribution to the broad acceptance of this concept. By your motivation and support for cooperative education you have helped shape the future of a generation of college graduates. Reverend President, it is my privilege to present Dr. Sinclair V. Jeter for the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 10, 1975.
