During more than a half a century as a practicing pediatric dentist, you have made profound contributions to the profession of dentistry. A tireless advocate for children's dentistry, you founded the American Society of Dentistry for Children in 1927 and served as editor of the Society's journal for its first 10 years. To ensure high standards in this specialty, you later established the Academy and the College of the American Pediatric Dentistry. You have promoted dental care for children throughout the world by initiating and helping to organize 18 national dental societies and the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry. As a benefactor to the dental profession, you have received numerous professional accolades, including the Distinguished Service Medallion from the American College of Dentists. You were designated an honorary lifetime member in such dental associations as the British Paedodontic Society and the International Association of Dentistry for Children. The National Museum of Dentistry at the University of Maryland was named in your honor, as were perinatal and early childhood oral education centers at universities across the country. Through your professional vision, you have brought pediatric dentistry to new heights, helping to ensure the dental health of today's young people. In recognition of your lifetime achievements, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry is pleased to confer upon you an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
