Poetic Express Volume 04

In 1989, I continued to do the masters on thin, cheap paper.  With the last issue of the year, Number 14, I finally started using using a thicker Bristol paper.  I continued to do this for nearly every issue from 1990 to the present day.

The first two issues feature "men" made out of newspaper headline collages.  Numbers 3 and 4 were part of The Motor City Revue.  This exhibit, sponsored by the Michigan Gallery, featured a number of artists exhibiting in Zacateca City (Zacateca, Mexico).  Five of my index card drawings are featured.

The "Just Kidding" issue, in Number 5, features poems dealing with children: problem child and children will play! as well as a vertical SURREAL THEATRE. Number 6 starts a story in SURREAL THEATRE called the love life of a bomb, which concerns a bomb involved in some strange and ugly intrigue, and includes "the fatal lure of the earth."

Number 10, was done in New York and handed out at a rainy "Stop Censorship in the Arts" Rally.

The third Emotional Digest Issue in Number 13 explores attention, envy, despair, joy, giddiness and indecisiveness.

The third annual Dedications Issues comprises issues numbers 11 and 12.  Number 11 includes enactments (for Malcolm X), an important twentieth century human being who always amazes me.  Then, there's In the Belly of the Wail (for Lord Buckley), a "jive talk" comic from the 1950's and 1960's who pushed language into some wild areas.  I wrote every fury (for Lautreamont), an 1800's "dark star" who only wrote a few books, died young and who inspired Surrealists everywhere.  Also, there's playgrounds (for Sun Ra), the great composer, musician and bandleader.  They're some of my heroes.

Personal Favorites: Number 1's the mad sailor dives into a surreal, nautical world.  Number 9's Declaration of Interdependence, is a personal manifesto-poem that I still try to adhere to.  I also favor the "dedications" poems in issues 7, 11, and 12.

SURREAL THEATRE favorites include Numbers 12, 13 and 14.
