Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

1977

Citation:

Your life-long interest in Great Lakes shipping and history has become, through the years, much more than an avocation. Thousands have learned from you of the magnificent ships which plied Michigan's waters. Through your beautiful paintings and photographs, your teaching and service to numerous marine organizations you have shared your love for the lakes and her vessels with many. Your detailed and dedicated scholarly research has added tremendously to Michigan's history of its great water-ways. In addition, through your long service to the university as a teacher you trained hundreds of students in the demanding basics of architectural and engineering drawing. Your unparalleled work with the University's archives has put into clear focus literally thousand of pieces of U of D memorabilia and historical papers which could otherwise have gone unrecorded and unnoted. Your contributions have been many and varied; to students, to the University as a body, to thousands of fellow lovers of Michigan history. The University you have made your home is proud, indeed, to call you one of its own and extend to you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 14, 1977.
