Former Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Citation:

Outstanding lawyer, Secretary of Labor of the United States, Supreme Court Justice who relinguished your post to serve America as representative to the United Nations, you consistently have placed your country's needs before personal ambition and goals.  You have dedicated your talents to aiding groups and individuals find justice and a better way of life, and to helping our nation work toward peace in the world.  In so doing you have set a singular example of the good that men can accomplish through the institutions they create, nurture and renew.

Award was presented on May 20, 1972 in Cobo Hall by Fr. Malcolm Carron, S.J., President of the University.
