Citation for Merit

1962

Citation:

Mr. William T. Gossett fulfills admirably the role of Plato’s good citizen: a lover of his country with a mind well-proportioned and gracious.  His attainment and executive position are but reflective of the deep and moral responsibility and perceptive intellect which have led him to the recognition of the need for education as an essential condition to overcoming racial bias.  So convinced, he has generously devoted time, talent, and energy in behalf of promoting better human understanding and easing tensions.

Such warm humanism in one whose own career has been spent in the highly competitive field of industry is a profound concept of charity and human compassion, a shining example of St. Paul’s message to the Corinthians: “the greatest of these is charity.”

To Mr. Gossett, champion of the brotherhood of man, Mercy College is proud to present on this occasion a merited accolade.

Awarded the sixth day of June, 1962.
