Mercy Medallion

1980

Bio:

Robert and Genevieve Sage are the first recipients of the Mercy Medallion.  Their individual and joint efforts to assist the recovering alcoholic in our society come from a lifelong commitment.  Besides being one of the Trustees of Mercy College of Detroit, Robert Sage is on the Board of Trustees for Guest House, a recovery center for alcoholic priests.  He initiated the Alcohol Information Referral Center at Bixby Hospital and was instrumental in establishing Mercy College’s program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies.

Genevieve Sage has been her husband’s greatest single support in his own personal struggles and recovery.  She provides a sustaining strength in partnership with her husband in their continuing dedication and service to the alcoholic.  She receives the Mercy Medallion for her generous and loving response to the special needs of her family and for her patience and belief in her husband.  Because of her own acceptance, love and positive spirit, Genevieve also receives the medallion in behalf of spouses of recovering and recovered alcoholics everywhere – people who have learned through their life experience the depth of compassion each is asked to give.

Award was presented at the Works of Mercy Dinner September 21, 1980 by William W. Lutz, Immediate Past Chairman of the MCD Board of Trustees, Associate Editor of the Detroit News.
