In the ever changing field of dentistry, the future depends on the commitment of leaders with personal dedication. You, D. Walter Cohen, have demonstrated this excellence through your distinguished service in the area of dental medicine. As dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and president-elect of the Medical College of Pennsylvania, you have provided exceptional leadership in the successful exploration of private practice in a clinical dental setting. Your achievements have been recognized both academically and professionally at many universities throughout the nation. Your works have also been heralded at institutions such as the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the University of Athens in Greece. An author of over 20 books and more than 100 articles, you also have served on various associations including the American Board of Periodontology, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and as an Honorary Member of the British Society of Periodontology. Your pioneering work in dentistry and dental education has enabled thousands of people to live healthy productive lives. In recognition of your dedication to improving the quality of dental services around the world, we proudly confer upon you this Honorary Doctor of Science Degree.
