1971

Bio:

Citation:

Priest, educator, university president.  You have given unselfishly of yourself and your talents to the advancement of a great university, Notre Dame.  But you have also found time, energy and dedication to assist the whole nation as it struggled to solve massive problems, especially in the area of civil rights.  In so doing, you have helped forge and preserve the mutual confidence between university and community upon which the future of higher education will be build in the decades ahead.  All American interested in their country and in the health of our private and public universities are in your debt for this great service.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you this citation and medal and I hereby declare you recipient of the President's Cabinet Award.
