President's Cabinet Award

1975

Bio:

Outfielder for the Detroit Tigers elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980, his first year of eligibility.

Citation:

A Detroit Tiger superstar for 22 years, you repeatedly have brought baseball fans to their feet across the nation with your clutch hitting and fielding.  You are among that small group of all-time baseball greats who have collected more than 3,000 hits; you have won 10 Gold Glove awards for your fielding; and have been chosen an American League All-Star 15 times.  A true champion, a man who has shown young people how to be gentlemen both on and off the field, you are an inspiration to your athletes and to adults everywhere.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you this citation and medal and I hereby declare you recipient of the President's Cabinet Award.
