President's Cabinet Award

1988

Citation:

As chairman of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls Associates, Inc., one of the most prestigious architecture and planning groups in the world, you have distinguished yourself as a man with vision and keen perception. You have excelled professionally because you have an understanding of the human beings for whom buildings, parks and homes are designed. Your efforts to promote and preserve downtown Detroit have not gone unnoticed. You have brought attention to this city by showing that preservation of our heritage can co-exist with the modern steel and concrete towers of today. As a person always concerned with the welfare of others, you have exhibited wisdom and fairness as head of many civic and community groups. You have also given your time freely to serve as trustee for such organizations as the Detroit Medical Center Corporation, Harper-Grace Hospital and the University of Detroit. In your chosen field of architecture, your name is synonymous with success. In 1969, you were named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. You are also past Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows. As Director of The Michigan Society of Architects, you have served on a number of state and national advisory committees. During your career you have been awarded the Gold Metal from both the Detroit and Michigan AIA organizations, as well as the Edward C. Kermer Award for your architectural contributions. In 1980 the United Foundation honored you with its Heart of Gold award for your efforts in fundraising and in 1986, the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce bestowed upon you its prestigious Summit Award. A dedicated family man, you put the business world on hold every Friday…not to resume until after dinner on Sunday. You believe the weekends are made for sharing and enriching the family core. In your personal and professional life, you represent a man of vigor and great vision. A true asset to this community, state and nation. Our world is a better place because of you.

Award was presented at the President's Cabinet Annual Awards Dinner, 1988.
