President's Cabinet Award

1992

Citation:

To the general public, Neal Shine is recognized as an accomplished and dedicated journalist; but to the University Community, he is also known as a valued alumnus and warm, caring friend. In 1950, while attending the University of Detroit and serving as Editor of the Varsity News, he began his career at the Detroit Free Press. Through the years, as he was promoted from reporter to editor and now publisher, he has distinguished himself as a capable and enthusiastic leader in the field of journalism. Guided by his sense on integrity and commitment to quality, he has led the Free Press to a position of national prominence resulting in numerous local and national awards. In both his written words and entertaining speeches, he is known for conveying poignant messages with humor, sensitivity and warmth. As a working newspaper man and an active journalism instructor, Shine serves as an inspiration to young people gently reminding them that hard work and determination can lead to personal and professional success.

Award was presented at the President's Cabinet Silver Anniversary Celebration, 1992.
