Art and Mary VanElslander have distinguished themselves as caring and compassionate friends to the community. Art VanElslander is known as an innovative businessman, a dedicated husband and father and a generous and enthusiastic community supporter. Since opening his first furniture store in 1959, he has earned a reputation of distinction as a leader in the field. Today, he serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Art Van Furniture, Michigan’s largest furniture company and the nation’s 10th largest furniture retailer. Mary Ann VanElslander is known for her love of children, having raised 10 and devoting her time to helping mentally handicapped children affiliated with St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and other children at many other community and charitable organizations. As a member of numerous professional, civic, charitable and religious organizations, he generously gives his time and talents. She is on the board at Children’s Home of Grosse Pointe and St. John Fontbonne Auxiliary. In recognition of his tireless efforts, he has received awards and honors from numerous groups, including the American Jewish Committee’s Humanitarian Award, the Michigan Travelers’ Dealer of the Year, and the Kresge Foundation Award. In 1990, they made a major donation to help save Michigan’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and continue to contribute each year to assure the parade’s success.
