Bio:

Background information is taken from correspondence in University archive files. Dr. White joined the University of Michigan staff as an instructor in 1897, and became professor of chemical engineering in 1907. He held that post until 1943, when he was made professor emeritus. In addition to his work at Michigan, Dr. White has been prominent in other fields. He was consulting chemical engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Mines and for the U.S. Army Ordnance. During World War I he was chief of Army Ordnance's research technical section, and later associate chief of the nitrates division. He went on the Officers Honorary Retired List as a colonel in 1946. He was president of the American Institute for Chemical Engineers, 1929 to 1931, and president of the American Society for Engineering education, 1941-1942.
