Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

As an attorney, businessman, and civic leader, you have demonstrated your commitment to the City of Detroit and to those less fortunate among us. A strong advocate for Detroit, you have volunteered your time and expertise to help revitalize the city. Through the creation of the Genesis Foundation, you have supported activities to assist the city's disadvantaged. Your community involvement also entails leadership roles on corporate boards and charitable organizations, such as the Michigan Cancer Foundation and the Prison Fellowship. Realizing the importance of quality education for our youth, you help to provide a supportive learning environment for young males in Detroit as a Cornerstone School board member. Over the years, you have also provided expertise and counsel to your alma mater, Wayne State University, where you now serve as a University governor. Your concern for the poor extends beyond Detroit to Third World countries where you have implemented self-help projects. Widely recognized for your professional and civic activities, Crain's Detroit Business magazine proclaimed you one of the "Leaders of the Nineties." For your accomplishments, you also were honored with the Business Professional Award from Religious Heritage of America and membership in the Order of the Coif. In recognition of your civic contributions, the University of Detroit Mercy is pleased to award you a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit Mercy, May 13, 1995.
